Job Description

Access to energy is a key pre-requisite for sustainable economic and social development. As such, universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy is also reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7). However, the world is currently not on track to reach SDG 7 by 2030. Significant inequalities in access to electricity and clean cooking persist across geographies and between population groups. The causes of unequal access are diverse and include a lack of last mile servicing and limited ability to pay. While supply side and enabling environment interventions have helped build commercial markets in last mile communities, they have not been able to close the affordability gap. Demand-side subsidies (DSS) will need to play an important and complementary role for the world to achieve universal energy access by 2030.

As an important player in the energy access space, Energising Development (EnDev) seeks to explore the topic of DSS further by developing DSS pilots in several Sub-Saharan countries. Pilots will seek to promote access to subsidised solar home systems or improved / clean cookstoves for marginalised households (incl. refugees) while minimising market distortion and encouraging collaboration with the private sector. Pilots will be designed together with national stakeholders with a view to scale up successful pilots in the medium-term.

Your Tasks

  • Supporting EnDev in setting up DSS pilots across Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Assisting in the development of relevant process and documents for the pilot development and implementation
  • Supporting the setup of new in-country operations in one country in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Coordinating the exchange with international stakeholders on demand-side subsidies
  • Collecting and evaluating lessons learned from other sectors and programs relevant to DSS
  • Assisting with the development and design of communication materials
  • Supporting day-to-day project activities
